Well, you might not believe it, but these two words cover a broad variety of things much more than just the gear you wear to work out in. From the literal definition of fitness fashion in the form of workout clothes: leggings, vest tops, shorts, trainers etc., to the fashion of emerging fitness trends such as crossfit and hot yoga, to equipment surging in popularity, for example resistance bands and foam rollers.

We’ve rated each choice out of 5 against three criteria - affordability, comfort, and durability - 1 being the lowest score and 5 being the highest. So let’s get right into it! We’ve divided this section up by brand and included a piece or two from each brand.
If you’ve been aware of the fitness world for a while, you may know that often new trends pop up, new workout styles emerge, and different workout classes gain popularity. In this section we’ll take a look at some of the latest workout trends and dive deep into the benefits and negatives of each one!
A relatively new trend, cross fit has gained more and more popularity over the past couple of years. CrossFit combines all kinds of movements and training variations (eg. cardio, heavy lifting, mobility) to create effective, functional workouts.
So, what are the pros of CrossFit?
To name but a few, CrossFit primarily targets the anaerobic system of the body, meaning that, over time, you can build up your lactic acid threshold and be able to perform better anaerobically. (Working anaerobically means that your muscles are not receiving oxygen). CrossFit movements are also typically very functional and can be applied to everyday movements, which is always useful.
Furthermore, due to the recent surge in popularity, the CrossFit community has become large and widespread, and is very welcoming to anyone joining in so you’re sure to get a warm welcome and make plenty of new friends if you decide to give it a go. The community is also super supportive, so no matter if you’re a complete cross fit newbie or more experienced, you will be able to work out in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
On the other hand, where there are pros, there are cons. Some cons to note with cross fit are: It can be difficult for beginners, especially if you have never performed some of the lifts before etc., and a cross fit session is not planned and personalised for every individual. As everyone has varying levels of fitness, strength, flexibility etc., this can sometimes not only be a con but also a barrier that could prevent some people from partaking in CrossFit.
Hot yoga is another trend that is relatively new and has been slowly gaining popularity due to it’s relaxing atmosphere and calming classes.
There are cons to hot yoga, some of the most common ones being a high risk of dehydration, a possibility of over-stretching, as your muscles are more relaxed from the heat you may stretch further than you are normally able to, leading to injury (although there are no definitive studies on this). Furthermore, you may struggle with the high temperature, especially at first, and struggle to keep your breathing even. There is a small risk of fainting/passing out due to the heat.
In contrast, pros to hot yoga include: increased strength and mobility, decreased stress, increased glucose tolerance and increased bone density. Another pro, although not necessarily scientifically backed, is that hot yoga allows you to “detox” your body by sweating out toxins. It is true that it will help to open up your pores which is said to be good for your
skin, however make sure you wash your face afterwards to avoid clogged pores!
Boxing has been around for a long time, however recently it has increased in popularity and boxing style circuit classes have begun popping up across the country. CPD (Continued Professional Development) courses in Boxing have risen in popularity as trainers are wanting in on the action and want to be able to safely and effectively coach their clients in this regard. Pros to Boxing: Improves cardiovascular health and fitness, improves balance and co-ordination, builds discipline and concentration, increases strength and muscular endurance, improves reflexes, good stress buster!
Cons to Boxing: Can be a tough workout (therefore challenging for beginners), can lead to injuries especially with the hands/knuckles. Overall though, with boxing-style training, serious injuries are rare and it’s only with serious boxing matches and fights that the chance of serious injury is increased.
Pole and Aerial Fitness
Pole and Aerial fitness has become the latest fitness trend to storm the fitness world. Studios teaching these disciplines usually offer both pole and aerial arts within their studio, so you can have a go at both if you fancy!
Physical benefits from pole and aerial fitness include improved flexibility, improved muscular strength and endurance (especially upper body), improved cardiovascular health, can help you to lose weight if you are overweight, improve core strength, improved co-ordination and rhythm.
Mental benefits from pole and aerial fitness include reduced stress, soaring body confidence, increased self esteem, a warm and welcoming, friendly and supportive community, and you’ll likely make lots of new friends!
Drawbacks to pole and aerial fitness are the risk of injury - you will use muscles you have never used before and will be putting your body into all kinds of fancy shapes, therefore you may be at risk of strains and sprains! There is also a small risk of falling off the equipment which could lead to injury. Bruising is also a common side effect, especially with pole fitness, although this is not serious and is nothing to worry about, and should decrease over time the more times you perform each move!
4. Emerging Equipment and Accessories
This section is broken into two parts: the first part looks at the latest equipment currently popular in the world of fitness, while the second section rounds up some of the new fitness fashion accessories that can positively affect your training
Of course you can get a great workout in without any equipment, just by using your body weight! But it cannot be denied that incorporating equipment into your workout routine can have great benefits. Let’s have a look at some of the current pieces of equipment that are super popular at the minute!
One piece of equipment that seems to be everywhere you look at the moment is resistance bands! Instagram models swear by them for giving them their huge glutes and sing their praises, but are they really as good as they are made out to be?
Well, yes and no. You see, resistance bands alone won’t grow your glutes or give you buns of steel, but they are a great tool to compliment your training. To increase strength and endurance in your glutes, you will need to add weights and do big compound moves such as squats and deadlifts. But resistance bands can be used during your warm up to activate your glute muscles and get them firing, meaning that they will be put to work during your workout instead of other muscles groups such as the hamstrings or quads taking over. You can also use them during your workout for added resistance, for example during a leg press.
And no guys, they aren’t just for girls! Everyone can benefit from incorporating resistance bands into their workout if done correctly. There are plenty of resources online - Google, YouTube and even the aforementioned Instagram - although do be careful with Instagram and ensure that the information you are consuming is coming from qualified fitness professionals who know what they are talking about, and not just a reality tv star or similar.
Stretching should play a big part of your workout routine and schedule, and foam rollers can help get a little deeper into those little niggles to loosen out the tightness. Some fitness professionals like foam rollers, others not so much and they feel that foam rollers may not be beneficial without suitable guidance. It’s completely personal as to whether you find benefit from foam rollers or not. Perhaps a massage may be preferable. You can get varying hardness and a variety of sizes and shapes of foam rollers to really target the majority of muscle groups, and again you can find lots of resources online on how to best use a foam roller. Alternatively you can always pop into your local gym and ask for advice.
In the general world of fashion, the word accessories usually makes the mind conjour up images of scrunchies, hair clips, necklaces and bags, but when it comes to fitness fashion, accessories bring on a whole new meaning. Here are some of the latest trends when it comes to fitness accessories.
We’ve all heard of FitBit, which was the fitness tracker that stormed the fitness world not long ago. But there are many more options now available, and some smartphones will even do all the tracking for you!
You can link your tracker to an app on your phone, or simply track through the app using your phone, so you can view all of your data in one place. Fitness trackers are great tools for looking at your heart rate during exercise, seeing the amount of calories burned, tracking your sleep cycle and much more.

There are plenty of fitness apps available, for example the fitness tracking apps as mentioned above, along with stand alone tracking apps such as My Fitness Pal.
But some of the latest trends in fitness apps include workout guide apps, for example Fit Body App by Anna Victoria, or Sweat by Kayla Itsines. These fitness guide apps provide pre-set workouts for users to follow, which is useful, particularly for beginners, as it provides structure and compiles exercises that work well together to create effective workouts. Some of these apps also incorporate recipes and snack ideas along with meal prep guidance for an all round guided experience. If you’re looking to follow one of these apps, it’s important to research the founder of the app to ensure they have the relevant fitness and/or nutrition qualifications.
Another trend that has surged in 2019 is the concept of an app that allows you to purchase a day/weekly pass for any gym. This is great for those who travel a lot, or those who want to try out different gym chains/locations before committing to purchasing a full membership. There are quite a few apps of this kind slowly popping up, including Pay As U Gym and Hussle.
Another big accessory trend is water bottles. Water bottles, we hear you say, but they’ve been around forever?! Well, yes that is correct. But the recent trend has seen a rise in stainless steel bottles, such as Chillies, which keep hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold. Perfect for taking your water to the gym on a hot summer's day, or keeping your morning coffee warm. They come in a variety of colours and patterns, making them enjoyable to look at. Plus, they are reusable and durable, therefore also better for the environment than your single use plastic water bottles!

This section includes the general fitness fashion trends circulating the internet. Some good, some bad - we’ve broken them all down for you below so that you can see the benefits of each and also the drawbacks.
Each year brings a new diet that is said to be the best thing you’ll ever try. The Keto diet, and the carnivore diet, which has high similarities to the Keto diet, were both very big in 2018 and are still very popular as we ease into 2019.
Another diet that is popular this year is the WW, rebranded Weight Watchers, which has seen an increase in people following the WW plan. This diet is typically followed by those looking to lose weight.
Another diet that is increasing in popularity is Veganism. Unlike short term diets, veganism is more of a lifestyle change and is primarily undertaken due to ethical and environmental concerns, with a smaller percentage of people becoming Vegan for health reasons.

Popular this year are vitamins such as Vitamin D, and the all around multivitamin. Protein powder is also still a big trend.
The biggest thing to note here is that before taking any health supplements, especially vitamins, make sure you consult with your doctor. You can have too much of a vitamin and it can cause some nasty side effects.
Gut health has recently snuck its way onto the radar, and probiotics have risen in popularity with brands like Optibac and Symprove. Harvard Medical School Health Publishing says: “Probiotics are "good" bacteria touted to help maintain digestive health and boost the immune system. Fasting has been around for a while, however it is only recently that more research is beginning to be conducted on this subject. A recent study by Edinburgh et al. looked at the effect of skipping breakfast before exercise. You can read about the study in more detail by clicking the link, but we’ve added a brief summary below.
The study was conducted with 12 healthy, physically active male participants. They each completed 3 trials in a randomised order each separated by 1 week - breakfast followed by rest (BR), breakfast before exercise (BE), and overnight fasting before exercise (FE). Their 24 hour energy balance was calculated after each trial.
The conclusions drawn from the study were:
“Neither exercise energy expenditure nor restricted energy intake via breakfast omission were completely compensated for post exercise. In healthy men, pre-exercise breakfast omission creates a more negative daily energy balance and could therefore be a useful strategy to induce a short-term energy deficit.”
Of course, there are limitations as to how and where the results can be applied. The study was conducted with a group of healthy, physically active young men, therefore the findings cannot be applied to women, older men, children, or those with medical conditions.
Furthermore, while this study has shown that skipping breakfast may be beneficial for weight loss, there is evidence from other research conducted that suggests skipping breakfast can negatively impact athletic performance.
